Terese "Tisa" Aceves, Ph.D.

Tisa Aceves is a Professor at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Education in Los Angeles, California. She holds credentials in multiple subjects, special education, and resource specialist programs, and a certificate in Bilingual, Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development from Loyola Marymount University. She obtained her Ph.D. in Special Education, Disabilities, and Risk Studies; and master’s in School Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

At the start of her career, Tisa taught for several years as a bilingual resource specialist in a small urban school district in Los Angeles County. In her current position, Tisa serves on several advisory boards for projects including Scaling Up Multi-Tiered System of Support Statewide with the Placer County Office of Education, Santa Clara County Office of Education, Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office, and WestEd Consortium. Tisa additionally partners with several non-profit organizations including Fiesta Educativa and Learning Rights Law Centerto support families’ access to information and support for their children with disabilities.

Her research interests include supporting culturally and linguistically diverse students’ learning needs, partnering with families within professional training programs, integrating Family as Faculty frameworks in educational training, and furthering special education advocacy with families from primarily low-income, Latinx/e communities. Tisa has served as a frequent contributor to the Collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability, and Reform (CEEDAR) Center’s work, including two Innovation Configurations (Evidence-Based practices for English Learners and Culturally Responsive Teaching) and a chapter on High-Leverage Practices related to collaborating with stakeholders. Tisa provides ongoing pro-bono consultation for non-profit parent and legal organizations supporting parent education, program evaluation, and advocacy for diverse families.

On a personal note, Tisa enjoys her family, her rescue dog, Cricket, traveling, and has started enjoying Pickleball.
